Ruwanmali saya is one of the biggest stupa in Sri Lanka. It is considered a marvel for its architectural qualities and sacred to many Buddhists all over the world. The great King of the Sri Lankan history, King Dutugemunu made this magnificent stupa. King Dutugemunu has become a great King in Sri Lankan history because he defeated the Chola King Elara and established the unity. The stupa is one of the world's tallest monuments, standing at 300 feet (91 m) and with a circumference of 950 ft (290 m).
According Sri Lankan history King Dutugemunu‘s treasury was empty because of the war. King Dutugemunu was fed up with wars. And he was so sad of the people who died during the war. But all the bhikkus consoled him and encouraged him to do good things. So he decided do social service. He has done many meritorious acts for Buddhism. He made Stupas and gave alms for the monks.
He had to spend a lot of money on wining the war. So the King was so sad and he thought that he can’t make the Ruwanmali Stupa as he wish. Bt he worked hard to achieve his success. At last he made it, the world largest Stupa.
From the bank of the river Gambhīra, situated a yojana (a distance measure) to the north of Anuradhapura bricks were acquired. From the village Avuruvininuggets of gold, from the village Tambapittha copper, from the village Samanveve gems were acquired.
